Kenworth Next-Generation Sleeper
ZIP worked with Kenworth to explore the next-generation sleeper environment for long-haul truckers. ZIP's team of researchers, designers and technologists developed a highly integrated truck cab, and an improved working and sleeping environment that resulted in dramatic increase in space efficiency and functionality. Increased usable floor area over 25% while doubling storage volume and adding over 3X more live/work surfaces.
PicoCricket Test and Manufacturing Strategy
The Playful Invention Company (Pico) is an educational toy company that developed the PicoCricket smart construction kit. PicoCricket consists of a controller and a set of interactive modules like switches, sensors and motors that can impart behavioral qualities to creative building projects. The system was developed by Smart Design. ZIP researched toy safety testing and compliance, and developed a low volume pilot manufacturing strategy.
Supercuts Personal Care Experience
Supercuts engaged IDEO to explore ways to improve the hair-cutting experience from both the customer's and the stylist's perspective. Lawrence Shubert led IDEO's team of design researchers, designers and engineers to identify opportunities and then to invent a line of professional care tools for stylists that optimized efficiency and quality of haircuts while significantly improving ergonomics, quality and safety.
"The Abyss" Special Effects
Edge Innovations and IDEO created 1/4 scale radio-controlled submersibles for dynamic special effects scenes on James Cameron's film "The Abyss". Lawrence Shubert worked as a special effects engineer to create a modular crash bar system that deformed in scale and quickly interchanged for multiple takes. He also maintained the vehicles on location and was the radio-control pilot for the Cab submersible during filming.
nTAG Feasibility Study
nTAG developed the world's first interactive name badge that enabled professional networking and data gathering at conferences and large events. ZIP developed the next generation product architecture, performed technical due diligence and crafted a complete project development plan for the design and implementation on the next generation product system. The results of the study were used to secure Series A venture capital funding.
Kodak Digital Imaging Strategy
Kodak engaged IDEO to explore the future of digital imaging at a time when the first consumer digital camera appeared on the market. Lawrence Shubert led IDEO's team of researchers, designers, technologists and strategists to create a wide range of digital imaging products and services that leveraged the unique properties of the new digital technology and Kodak's strong brand in film- based imaging. The solution enabled users to capture, manage, display and share images easily in a compelling manner.
